Wire Cages or Plastic Crates

There are a wide variety of dog and cat crates available in the markets today. The two that people have heard of the most are the wire cages and the plastic crates. Lets take a look at each and see which one is best for your particular pets needs.

Many wire cages are collapsible, fold and carry styles, making them much easier to store and transport. Some wire cages come with removable divider panels that can be expanded to allow your pet to grow. Start out small and then simply move the panels over when your dog grows to large for the space. Wire cages are easier to clean, especially the ones with a removable plastic tray at the bottom. Other benefits to a wire cage are better ventilation and provide better visibility for your pet. Pets like to see what’s going on around them, and the wire kennels are perfect for full view that makes them feel more part of the action. So, either a Square Back Cage for at home or a Fold and Carry Cage are the two options for a wire pet cage. Both have durable, easy to clean polyethylene trays and there is no way your pet can escape from either.

Plastic crates have advantages of their own. If you need to travel with your pet by plane, plastic crates are required by law on aircraft. Some owners feel that the plastic kennels are better for privacy and a better sense of security for their pet. A high-activity home may do better with a plastic crate, particularly homes with small children. Check to see if your choice is an airline approved dog crate before you purchase. Crates should have flow-through ventilation on all sides and secure door locks with food/water cups.

With either the wire cage or plastic crate you will need to make sure you secure the right size for your pet. Your pet should be able to lie down, turn around and have three to four inches of extra head room when he or she is sitting or standing. The right sized kennel may seem too small to you but could be just the perfect fit for your pet. This is especially true with small puppies. You don’t want to buy a large crate with a puppy as they may go over in a corner for elimination. Either get a puppy crate to use in the interim until he or she grows up or purchase one that you can use throughout your pets life and add divider panels to reduce the size of the area until they grow up.

Any true pet owner can tell you the great advantages of having a kennel for your pet. Kennels are used for everything from training to travel and more. If you have any problems with caging your animal, any veterinarian, professional trainer or other pet owners who have used cages can tell you the value of owning one.
